What is the ruling on reading the Qur’an from the “phone” during prayer?

Sheikh Ahmed Mamdouh, Director of the Sharia Research Department and Secretary of Fatwa at the Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa, confirmed that reading the Qur’an in prayer from a mobile phone or from the Quran is permissible and valid.

Mamdouh said, during the live broadcast on “Facebook”, that it is permissible for the worshiper to read from the Qur’an in the supererogatory prayers as well as the written prayers (the five daily prayers), indicating that this is the Shafi’i school of thought and the statement adopted in the Ahmed doctrine, and that the Malikis went to dislike it.

He pointed out that those authorized to read the Qur’an from the Qur’an during prayer infer from what al-Bayhaqi narrated on the authority of Aisha, may God be pleased with her, that her boy Dhakwan used to lead her from the Qur’an in Ramadan.

For his part, Sheikh Ahmed Wissam, the trustee of the fatwa in the house, confirmed that there is no legal objection to reading the Qur’an from the phone, explaining that whoever says less reward compared to the Qur’an has made a mistake.

He stated that there is no difference between them, because what is important is reading and contemplating the meanings of the words and acting on them, pointing out that reading from the phone is not considered abandoning the Qur’an, as some say, because abandonment means leaving the word of God Almighty and not reading it.
