Young midwife brutally murdered in northern Afghanistan

A young midwife has been kidnapped and brutally murdered in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif, in the latest in a series of mysterious killings that have surged since the Taliban's return to power.

The young midwife, Nafisa Balkhi, was called to work yesterday, Friday, but she did not return home during the night, as her body was found in Al-Madina Hospital on Saturday morning, according to local media, quoting her family.

Mohammad Asif Waziri, a spokesman for Mazar-i Sharif police, told DPA that the bodies of a midwife and a man were found in a car in the city's seventh police district.

Police said the man's family has reported him missing.

Waziri added that the families of the two victims are under police surveillance, indicating that investigations will begin after the funeral ceremony.

And mysterious killings of young women in Afghanistan have increased in recent months.
