In an apartment fire in Oberhausen in North Rhine-Westphalia, a man fell out of the burning house and died from his serious injuries.

As the fire brigade announced on Saturday night, the fire broke out on Friday evening in the multi-storey house.

A total of 13 people, four dogs, a cat and several birds were rescued via ladders.

However, one man fell from the second floor during the rescue operation.

The injured man and six other people suspected of having smoke inhalation were taken to the hospital, while everyone else was treated at a nearby Red Cross facility.

However, the man who fell out of the house died in the hospital from his injuries.

The fire was extinguished after around two hours.

Police investigations have been launched into the cause.

The house is currently not habitable.
