Jimmy Kimmel boarded the plane to New York to lead NBC's "Tonight show" and Jimmy Fallon in turn traveled to California to host ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel live", writes The Hollywood Reporter.

Kept the layout secret

The surprise was total for both the studio audience and the TV viewers who got to see Kimmel interview Hugh Jackman, among others, while Fallon had Justin Timberlake as a guest.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers also had a busy schedule as they served as musical guests in both programs.

Jimmy Fallon later admitted in the broadcast that they worked hard to keep the show secret and that the two talk show hosts planned the prank for four years.
