• In Marseille, the authorities are trying to make young people aware of the risks of urban rodeos.

  • Awareness sessions are organized in high schools in Marseille

"Who's done rear wheels before?"

The majority of the fifteen students in Terminale Security trades at the Estaque high school, in the northern districts of Marseille, raise their hands.

“More than two?

“Asks Hakim Benhamel, road safety expert.

Same scene.

“I did it behind someone, does that count?

“says a young girl.

"It's also the girls who encourage you to get up," grumbles his comrade.

Me, she wants me to lift her, I lift her!

"And you will work in security," quips Hakim Benhamel.

Well, we didn't come for nothing…”

Throughout the day, dozens of students from this establishment followed an awareness course on the risks of urban rodeos, organized by the Bouches-du-Rhône police headquarters, in the face of the significance of this phenomenon in the department.

"A year, recently, over a fortnight, we had five deaths in the rear wheel," recalls Hakim Benhamel.

Training at Plan-de-Campagne

And to ask: “Are there any who go to Plan-de-Campagne to train?

At the back of the class, a student raises his finger.

“Me, I have already seen cops who checked me and then left in reverse”, brags another.

"Yeah, I'm going to the cinema car park, but to see!

», Launches a third.

“But anyone can cross in the middle of the road, recalls the road safety expert.

You may bump into your sister with her baby in the stroller.

"But Sir, have you ever reared, even when you were young, say fifteen or twenty years ago?"

“Amazed a pupil, teasing, in his red polo shirt.

“Never, because I know the consequences that this can have”, answers Hakim Benhamel.

"Make them think"

"The idea is to get them to think," says the road safety expert.

We are here to initiate change;

using their vocabulary, their experiences, and trying to touch them with their emotions.

And for that, the trainers of the day do not hesitate to use shocking arguments... and which turn out to be rather convincing.

At the request of Hakim Benhamel, a student in CAP Safety Officer sits on a chair, and simulates a Y. “What happens in the event of a fall?

Which parts can be affected?

“A few minutes of reflection later, the young man in a black tracksuit lets go: “It hits in the private parts.

We can make a ligament!

» « So you will ask your best friend to devote himself to your future wife every night.

We'll put you two plastic balls for aesthetics and a pipe to pee.

»

In the workshop of the next class, devoted to repression, the tone is much less playful.

"Urban rodeos are a crime, punishable by one year's imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros," a policeman reminds the class.

If it's in a meeting, two or three, it's two years' imprisonment and a 30,000 euro fine.
