• Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, the city of Mariupol has been of strong strategic interest to Vladimir Putin.

Russian forces have been besieging the gates of the port city for several weeks and the city is almost constantly bombarded.

  • Russia said Thursday that a humanitarian corridor allowing the evacuation of civilians would be opened this Friday in Mariupol.

However, the spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross said this morning that there was little hope that the Kremlin would keep its word.

At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that the Russian army was repositioning itself in the east of the country in anticipation of "powerful attacks", particularly in Donbass and Mariupol.

back on the key elements and events of the week in infographics.

On the 37th day of conflict, Russia is trying to reinforce its troops located in the east of the country in the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Despite the promises of the head of the Kremlin, the Russian army multiplies localized counter-attacks in these regions.

In this context, the port city of Mariupol remains in the sights of the Soviet forces and crystallizes many of the attacks of the armed forces of Vladimir Putin.

The advance of Russian forces in Ukraine

Russia is concentrating its war efforts on the Donbass region in the east of the country.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured that the Russian army was repositioning itself in the east of the country in anticipation of “powerful attacks”, in particular on the besieged port of Mariupol.

In parallel, the Russians “continue their partial withdrawal” from the north of the kyiv region, towards the Belarusian border.

Simultaneously, Soviet troops left the Chernobyl power plant which they had occupied since the start of the invasion on February 24.

Finally, in the south, the Ukrainian armed forces claimed to have liberated 11 localities in the Kherson region.

Civilians affected by the conflict

According to a UN report released on Wednesday, the war in Ukraine would have killed at least 1,150 civilians and injured 1,800.

At the same time, just over 4.1 million Ukrainian refugees have fled their country since the start of the Russian invasion, according to figures from the High Commission for Refugees.

And in total, more than ten million people, more than a quarter of the population, have had to leave their homes either by crossing the border to find refuge in neighboring countries, or by finding refuge elsewhere in Ukraine.

The Advance of Soviet Troops in Mariupol

The port city of Mariupol has been besieged by the Russian army since late February.

On this infographic we see the advance of the Soviet forces since March 9 with an evolution on the dates of March 16, 23 and 30.

After the attack on a maternity hospital and a theatre, the building of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was once again the target of Russian bombardments just forty-eight hours ago.

A project of humanitarian corridors in Mariupol

Russia said Thursday that a humanitarian corridor allowing the evacuation of civilians would be opened this Friday in Mariupol.

“The Russian Armed Forces will reopen a humanitarian corridor from Mariupol to Zaporozhye on April 1 starting at 10 a.m. from Moscow,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.

However, as early as Friday morning, Ewan Watson, spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, was skeptical of this Russian proposal.

“There are a lot of moving parts and all the details are not settled to be sure that it happens safely (…) It is not yet clear if it will be done today”.

At the end of the afternoon, no evacuations have yet seen the light of day...
