An employee stole $40 million from a university for a strange reason

The former director of the Yale University School of Medicine has admitted that she stole $40 million worth of electronic equipment from the institution and sold it to live a "luxurious life."

Jamie Petron Codrington, 42, pleaded guilty to stealing computers and electronic equipment from the prestigious Yale University;

She used the money she made to sell electronic devices;

To finance her lavish lifestyle, including buying several homes, acquiring a fleet of luxury cars, and vacationing around the world.

According to the British newspaper "Daily Mail", "Jimmy" has bought 4 luxury homes, 6 luxury cars, in addition to clothes, shoes and bags of the largest international brands, and she also used to spend vacations with her husband and child in the most luxurious resorts around the world.

It is strange that the employee and her husband used to publish pictures of this lavish life on social media;

Which drew attention to its outrageous richness.

Jimmy pleaded guilty to fraud in connection with her years-long scheme, in addition to the charge of filing a false tax return.

Jamie faces up to 23 years in prison, the Connecticut attorney general said;

Noting that the verdict against her will be issued on June 29 next.

The former employee was arrested in September 2021;

following a criminal complaint;

But she was released on bail of one million dollars.

The move to arrest the employee came after the university reported to the American police that there was evidence of criminal behaviour.

Jimmy's job was to make equipment purchases for medical school, less than $10,000.

Since the beginning of 2013, Jimmy has continuously requested - either directly or through its employees - the purchase of electronic equipment;

Including iPads, they were valued at millions of dollars, and continued like this for years.

The employee purchased the devices with the college's money, and resold them illegally;

Which caused the university to lose more than 40 million dollars, and the US public treasury lost more than 6 million dollars due to employee thefts.

To cover up the thefts, Jamie falsified college documents to claim she needed to purchase electronic devices, and all orders were less than $10,000;

This is because any request above this number requires additional approval, which may raise suspicion.
