Afghanistan's Taliban government is now cracking down on foreign media.

As part of the militant regime's way of restricting civil rights, broadcasting bans are now being introduced for the British BBC, German Deutsche Welle, Voice of America and China's global television network.

Affects six million viewers

The BBC calls the event "a worrying development" and says that this will affect six million viewers who regularly watch the channels' programs on Pashto, Dari and Uzbek.

However, the companies' radio and online services have not been affected.

BBC world services' language director Tarik Kafala believes that it is of the utmost importance that Afghan citizens have access to independent journalism in a time of "insecurity and turbulence".

"We urge the Taliban to withdraw the decision immediately," Kafala told the BBC.

Many journalists have left the country

When the Taliban regained power in the country in August 2021, many journalists fled Afghanistan.

The decision to stop international media is one in a series of increasingly intense authoritarian trends.

It comes just days after the government decided not to allow girls in high school and up to return to school.
