Mexicans will be able to rent the presidential plane, spurned by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for birthdays or weddings.

The machine should be used by the citizens so that they remain in flight operations and the operating costs are covered, López Obrador said on Monday.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner can also be used for family trips or company celebrations.

The plane will be handed over to a military-run company to organize rentals.

Mexico's ex-president Felipe Calderón bought the plane for $218 million.

But it was only used by his successor Enrique Peña Nieto.

The jet is equipped with one bedroom, one private bath and 80 seats.

López Obrador described the luxury plane as an "insult" for all Mexicans and announced when he took office in 2018 that he would sell the presidential plane and only use scheduled flights.

But he couldn't find a buyer for the machine.
