5 French people commit suicide by jumping from the balcony of an apartment in Switzerland

Swiss police said that five French people jumped from the balcony of an apartment in Montreux, in the west of the country, yesterday morning, killing four and injuring the fifth.

Swiss police said three adults and a child were killed and a teen seriously injured after they fell from a seven-storey apartment building in the lakeside town of Montreux.

She added that the victims were all French citizens and members of the same family.

Police reported that two officers knocked on the door of an apartment before the incident and identified themselves, adding, "Because they were unable to contact the potential occupants, they left the scene."

And she continued, "In the meantime, a witness called security to report that people had fallen from the balcony of an apartment."

The authorities confirmed that an investigation had been opened to determine the exact circumstances and causes of this tragedy, stressing that the presence of another person in the apartment at the time of the incident could be excluded at this stage of the investigation.

Regional police spokesman Alexander Bessens told the Associated Press he could not immediately confirm Swiss media reports that the five jumped from a building.

Bessens added that they were found around 7 a.m. Thursday outside a building near the city's famous Barriere Casino.
