Around the world, cultural institutions have stopped cooperating with Russian cultural workers.

The Berlin Film Festival boycotts films funded by the Russian state and the Stockholm Film Festival bans Russian films as long as the war lasts.

The Ukrainian Film Academy believes that a boycott of culture is necessary and calls on the film world to stop collaborating with Russian filmmakers.

- We call for a boycott because the Russian cultural elite has allowed the terrible regime to fight wars against Europe and Ukraine.

They have a moral responsibility for it and therefore cooperation with them is inappropriate as long as the war is going on, says Pylyp Illienko, head of the board of the Ukrainian Film Academy.

Loznitsa expelled from the academy

Not everyone agrees that a boycott of culture is the way to go.

Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa has expressed support for Russian filmmakers who oppose Putin's regime.

He has because of this been expelled from the Ukrainian Film Academy who believe that Russians have a collective responsibility for the war in Ukraine.

- I believe that Russian artists and filmmakers are responsible for what is happening now.

They are public figures that many look up to and they have supported Putin's regime for more than 20 years.

They have tolerated it and even allowed themselves to be financed by it.

They have a moral and political responsibility for that action, says Pylyp Illienko.

"Need to understand why more people do not protest"

Stefan Ingvarsson, analyst at the Center for Eastern European Studies and former cultural councilor in Moscow, believes that the issue of cultural boycott is not entirely simple.

- There are two things to keep in mind.

One is that there is a terrible war going on that has just passed into a phase where civilians are being attacked.

We know that not every Russian is responsible for this war, but right now civilians in Ukraine are dying and then we have to put our foot down, he says.

- At the same time, we need to understand why it is possible to do this in the name of Russian society, why more people do not protest.

Then it may be especially important right now to show a documentary depicting Russian society, to show a work of art that shows how Russia relates to its history, its imperialism.
