A tornado wreaked havoc in the US state of Louisiana on Tuesday evening.

At least one person died and many homes were destroyed, authorities said.

The New Orleans branch of the National Weather Service had issued a tornado warning for the city in the evening.

Local authorities reported "severe damage to homes" in Arabi, an eastern suburb of New Orleans.

"Rescues are underway to help residents trapped in their homes," the St. Bernard Municipality Sheriff's Office, of which Arabi is a part, said on Facebook.

The community leader of St. Bernhard told the TV station WDSU that at least one person had died in Arabi.

Footage local TV stations and online networks showed covered houses, downed utility poles and power lines, and debris in the streets.

The tornado was generated by a series of storms that swept across the southern United States on Tuesday.

Other tornadoes had previously been observed in east Texas.
