The firefighters intervened Sunday in Sommières, in the Gard, for a flow of hydrocarbons at the level of Vidourle.
The river serves as a natural demarcation with the Hérault department to the west.
The waste oil spill came from an underground tank that overflowed into the rainwater network.
The specialized chemical risk intervention team of the fire brigade installed a floating dam in order to stop the flow and plug the leak from the tank.
“These actions have proven to be effective,” explain the Gard firefighters.
The dam lifted in a few days
A specialized company will intervene on Monday to drain the tank.
The dam will be lifted in the following days, after ensuring that there is no risk of pollution.
