Physical and mental health starts with good sleep

March 21 is the 22nd World Sleep Day.

At the "2022 World Sleep Day Press Conference" held by the Sleep Medicine Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association on the 19th, Lu Lin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Peking University Sixth Hospital, pointed out that long-term lack of sleep can have fatal effects , studies have shown that long-term sleep problems can increase the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Only 22.56% of the public are aware of sleep disorders

How many people know that poor sleep can lead to many diseases?

"About 37.52% of the public have heard of it but don't understand it, about 33.94% have never heard of poor sleep and cause disease, and only 22.56% know something." Ye Jingying, chairman of the Sleep Medicine Professional Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association When the report on the sleep status of urban office workers was released, it pointed out that the public lacked understanding of sleep diseases, which revealed that there is still a long way to go for related science.

The source of this set of data is 500,000 pieces of sleep data and 1,833 valid questionnaires in 2021. The sample age covers office workers over the age of 18, including 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in the mainland (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).

According to Ye Jingying, the average sleep time of questionnaire survey users was 7.5 hours, and the average sleep time of watch bracelet users was 6.85 hours.

Only 22% sleep more than 8 hours, 53% sleep between 6 and 8 hours, and 25% sleep less than 6 hours.

The data shows that 47% of office workers report poor sleep quality, and only 30.6% of office workers reach the standard for deep sleep time; 25% of the population snores every night, potentially at risk of sleep apnea; the cities most likely to stay up late include Beijing, In Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, the province that sleeps the lastest is Guangdong, with an average bedtime of 23:55.

What are the factors that lead to poor sleep quality?

According to Ye Jingying, the data shows that "playing with mobile phones" and social pressure rank first and second respectively.

"Playing with mobile phones" accounted for 59.7%, of which in addition to entertainment, processing work also accounted for a certain proportion.

According to Ye Jingying, among the office workers with poor sleep quality, 51.6% showed memory loss and 47.8% showed inability to concentrate; 25.5% of the people who slept less than 6 hours were overweight; the sleep time was less than 6 hours Among office workers, 45% have facial skin problems.

The source of many chronic diseases is closely related to sleep disorders

Sleep is an important physiological process to maintain human life activities.

Dong Jiahong, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and dean of Tsinghua University's School of Clinical Medicine, pointed out: "Adequate sleep, balanced diet and proper exercise are the three health standards recognized by the international community."

Han Demin, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an otorhinolaryngologist, pointed out that the source factors of various chronic diseases are closely related to sleep diseases, and it is necessary to have a very important understanding of the relationship between health and sleep, and more importantly, to promote knowledge popularization, Let the public understand the importance of sleep.

"Actually, sleep has an important physiological function. The most basic cognitive memory of humans is completed during sleep, the metabolites of brain tissue are eliminated during sleep, and mutant tumor cells are also eliminated during sleep. , There is sleep to be healthy." Lu Lin pointed out that good sleep can reduce the occurrence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

He cited the findings of a team from four universities and pointed out that sleep duration is directly related to hypertension, atrial fibrillation, and pulmonary embolism in the population; sleep disorders increase the risk of dementia; sleep disorders are also closely related to psychiatric diseases. Diseases, doctors also try to maintain their good sleep.

In the process of exchanges between experts, preschool children are also the focus group.

Research has found that sleep problems can affect preschoolers' ability to empathize and understand others.

Sleep is the basic guarantee of health.

Lu Lin lamented that every time he had a clinic, middle school students and college students came to see the doctor.

The incidence of sleep disorders among adolescents in my country is 26%, and some even drop out of school because of sleep disorders, which affects their own growth.

"To prevent Alzheimer's disease, good sleep is also very important." Lu Lin said.

Sleep-related data and research platforms are being built

At present, many people do not know about sleep knowledge and sleep-related diseases, and do not know how to go to the sleep department for diagnosis and treatment.

"Most people with sleep disorders are very anxious and very painful. They are not feeling well, and they will go to the sleep department for a long time after investigation." Lu Lin said, this is why we hope to do more scientific popularization on World Sleep Day.

He introduced that through the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a national sleep data and research platform is being established. At present, the Sixth Hospital of Peking University is cooperating with related companies and platforms, and dozens of major hospitals have already participated.

"This can also promote the intersection of sleep medicine and multidisciplinary." Lu Lin said.

Han Demin said frankly that there is still a dilemma in the treatment of sleep breathing diseases in my country. Most of the sleep medicine diagnosis and treatment centers that meet the standard are located in big cities, and there is a lack of grassroots specialists.

"This is also the significance of establishing a large database and platform of sleep medicine in China, so that sleep doctors can share the information of each patient with their counterparts across the country through the platform and data, and guide patients through the data and platform." Lu Lin said .

"Now there is a sleep monitoring bracelet, you can use it as a reference, but if you suspect that you have sleep problems for a long time, you still need to go to the hospital to monitor your sleep, and ask a professional doctor to give a diagnosis. At the same time, don't look at electronic products before going to bed, you can read books , listen to soothing music, actively participate in outdoor sports during the day, especially primary and secondary school students must have outdoor activities, and sleep quality will be better at night." Lu Lin suggested.
