A car rammed into a crowd attending a festival in the southern Belgian city of Louvier, on Sunday morning, killing four people and seriously injuring 12 others, according to local authorities.

Mayor Jacques Goubert told the Belga news agency that a car traveling at high speed hit a crowd that had gathered to attend the carnival.

Media reports added that the accident may have been caused by the police chasing the car that hit the crowd, according to "Sky News".

"What should have been a glorious celebration has turned into a tragedy," said Home Secretary Inlize Verlinden.
