Science Four commonly used drugs reverse Alzheimer's symptoms in mice
World Alzheimer's Day Cristina, Pasqual Maragall's daughter: "When my mother died, I had to assume the guardianship of my father"
The first symptoms appeared five years ago on the set of
Who Will Sing
to You by
Carlos Vermut.
Carme Elías (Barcelona, 1951) did not give them importance, she blamed them on
nerves
.
Until on the set of the last film in which he participated,
The consequences
of
Claudia Pinto
, the situation worsened.
"Everything exploded there," he explains.
"I have a punctual role in the film, but I started my texts and I couldn't continue. I thought it was due to fatigue, that my memory was failing. We had to shoot in pieces. Then I began to reject contracts because I didn't feel qualified, so least to make movies. In the end the opinion came. A person told me: what happens to you has a name and it is
Alzheimer's
."
Elías (Barcelona, 1951) announced this afternoon at the
Brain Film Festival
in Barcelona that he suffers from Alzheimer's, the brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and the ability to think and that affects some 800,000 people in Spain alone.
The festival, promoted by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, has awarded him an award for his career in theater and cinema.
Recording everything up close was Pinto, who had become Elías' "soul mate" and the producer of a documentary in progress about the delicate process that has elapsed from the first warning signs to the acceptance of the disease.
"
Forgive me if I repeat myself
, it's not my fault. It's Mr. Al's fault," Elías, as elegant and glamorous as ever, will joke throughout the meeting with the journalists.
Her brother Joan de ella, in a discreet background and very attentive, whispers something in her ear.
"Without the family mattress, this would be impossible," admits the actress, who has reacted to the diagnosis with a mixture of
sadness and creative euphoria.
.
"I'm writing a lot, about what happens to me every day, what I feel, thoughts that arise around all this... But not in a drama plan, eh? It's neither comedy nor tragedy. I don't know exactly what it is. it is, but it helps me let off steam," he confesses.
"I lead a normal life, I go out shopping in the neighborhood, I lead the life of a housewife. But what I most want to do is stay at home, which is where I am happiest, and
seclude myself
. I read, cook and watch movies."
Between writing spurts and "normal life," the slump sometimes sets in.
"What was the saying? When I want to cry, I don't cry, and sometimes I cry without meaning to. That's what happens to me, suddenly many unexpected tears come to me."
Elías is not in what she describes as "the
bicycle, spoon, apple
moment " of the famous documentary that portrayed Maragall's Alzheimer's.
But like the former president of the Generalitat, she is confident that "giving
visibility
" to the disease "may help people who are in the same situation."
"Making the decision to tell it publicly was the most difficult because suddenly you think that from now on you will be pointed out on the street. But I hope it will be useful for the disease. And I think it will be very
beautiful
.
I thought: why not leave a document of my passage through this whole process?
At the same time, this way I have the opportunity to be in what I have always loved, which is my profession.
I think that now I will really start to cry," says Elías, and he cries. "She has touched me.
It is the tunnel of horror.
I'm ready for whatever comes, but at the same time I'm totally unprepared.
The emotions are still very much alive and so is the
conscience
, although sometimes I repeat myself.
But hey, it's essential to keep your sense of humor.
If not, you die."
