Marina Ovsiannikova leaves her job at the state-owned Kanal 1. To the French media, she confirmed on Thursday that she has submitted her resignation and that "a legal process is now beginning".

In a video message that was recorded before the protest, she expresses shame and remorse for having worked for the channel.

- During my years on Channel 1, I have been involved in spreading the Kremlin's propaganda, she says.

For the clip, she has been sentenced to pay a fine of 30,000 rubles, approximately SEK 2,700.

For the actual protest on television, she still risks up to 15 years in prison.

Ovsiannikova says she has ruined her entire family's life through the act, but she says she does not want to leave Russia.

- We must put an end to this war before it develops into a nuclear war, I hope that my son will understand when he gets older.

Refused French asylum

In connection with the anti-war protest, the TV editor was offered asylum in France by the country's president Emmanuel Macron, something she refused.

- I do not want to leave our country.

My son and I are patriots, we do not want to go anywhere, she tells the German magazine Der Spiegel.

According to Oviannikova, she prepared the coup alone but suspects that several of her colleagues sympathize with her.

- Many of those who work in state television understand what is going on and know that they are doing something wrong, says Marina Ovsiannikova.
