An American teenager causes a tragedy in Texas

Texas authorities announced Thursday that a 13-year-old boy who was driving a pickup truck collided with a minibus transporting a college team of golfers, killing nine people, and causing a catastrophe for the state.

The accident, which occurred last Tuesday evening in West Texas, claimed 6 members of the golf team at the University of New Mexico in addition to their coach, and the accident also led to the death of the 13-year-old boy and his 38-year-old father.

Texas authorities indicated that the pick-up truck veered into the opposite lane on the road and hit the pickup truck, setting the two vehicles on fire.

Bruce Landsberg of the US National Traffic Safety Board confirmed to local broadcaster KWIS that the boy was driving the pick-up at the time of the accident.

Driving at the age of 13 is considered illegal in Texas, where anyone must be 15 years old to get a driver's license accompanied by an adult with a driver's license and learn the basics of driving from him.

Bruce Landsberg explained that the left front tire appeared to have exploded before the accident, which occurred as the two vehicles were moving at high speed.

Two Canadian students are still in the hospital in critical condition, as they were seriously injured in the incident.
