Charles Michel asserted that the war, in addition to being dramatic for the Ukrainians, is also "a disaster for Russia", which did not expect such resistance from the Ukrainians and such drastic sanctions from from the Atlantic Alliance.

He affirms that the European Union has been able to show itself united, and that the Member States have gathered one billion euros to finance military equipment for the Ukrainian army.

"This is the first time that we have delivered lethal equipment", recalls the President of the European Council. 

With regard to the no-fly zone requested by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Charles Michel affirms that he "understands the legitimacy of this call", but recalls that the transatlantic alliance seeks above all not to precipitate an escalation of the conflict, which could trigger World War III. 

For him, the war in Ukraine marks a step for Europe towards the integration of its Member States.

The Versailles summit is, according to the President of the European Council, "a Copernican change" in terms of EU defense policy.
