The Roussillon Ornithological Group (GOR) recently studied the astonishing journey of a dead Bonneli eagle on an electricity pylon in Corbère-les-Cabanes (Pyrénées-Orientales) in December 2021.
In three years, the bird has traveled all over Europe, going to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and even Denmark.
These are unusual regions for this species, explains Actu Perpignan.
An “extraordinary” trip
The female eagle, ringed in the Aude in 2019, also crossed the entire extent of French territory, Spain, Portugal and even went to the border between Morocco and Mauritania.
This journey of several thousand kilometers, described as “extraordinary” by Yves Aleman, president of the GOR, would be explained by the youth of the animal, which did not yet have a fixed home.
The death of the bird, in addition to abruptly ending this trip, worried the association.
Only 40 pairs of Bonneli eagles have been recorded in France.
The GOR has requested that Enedis install bird devices on the Corbère-les-Cabanes line to limit the risk of collision and electrocution.
