From the agronomic point of view, Benin benefits from a hot and humid tropical climate, with an average temperature of between 22 and 24 degrees, and a humidity rate of between 65 and 95%.

What is favorable to the production of this fruit.

Production volumes are currently around 40,000 tonnes per year.

The pineapple production areas are located in the southern part of the country, where the rainfall levels are the highest, and particularly in the departments of Atlantique, Ouémé, Plateau, Mono and Couffo.

The department of the Atlantic remains incontestably the first producer.

Seven of its nine administrative communes (Abomey-Calavi, Allada, Kpomassè, Ouidah, Toffo, Tori and Zè) are engaged in pineapple production.

This department, which accounts for approximately 10% of the Beninese population, would concentrate nearly 80% of the total production of pineapple on the 2,000 hectares currently cultivated in Benin.

It is estimated that 10,000 people are involved in production, and nearly 100,000 people directly or indirectly involved in the sector (production, processing, transport, etc.).

More than 95% of the pineapple is intended for sale, and is increasingly being processed by certain women's groups into pineapple juice.

To control the whole process, the Beninese Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has set up a platform of actors in the pineapple sector.

This platform brings together producers, processors, distribution, research institutes and financiers.

The aim is to increase production and quality, to improve the marketing of fresh fruit, but also of by-products on regional and international markets.
