Côtes-d'Armor fishermen will not be able to kill 40 cormorants in the department.

The request to this effect submitted by the fishing federation of the department was indeed refused by the prefect.

Bird advocates welcomed it.

Among them are the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), Vivarmor Nature and Bretagne Vivante.

“The request of the fishing federation claimed an attack on fish populations, but it did not provide any justification or scientific element, estimated the associations, quoted by

Ouest-France

.

It did not propose any alternative (less radical) protection solution for fish populations”.

A protected species

Activists also feared shooters would confuse maritime, unkillable, and continental cormorants.

The fishermen had requested a derogation allowing the removal of 20 birds in Guerlédan, 15 in Glomel and 5 in Saint-Gilles-Vieux-Marché (Côtes-d'Armor) although cormorants are a protected species.

They claimed that the animals ate too many fish.
