Javier Silva and Jaime Nazar go down in history as the first same-sex couple in Chile.

They can officially call themselves married couples and enjoy the same rights after their civil marriage, thanks to a new law allowing same-sex marriage, which came into force on Thursday.

The two men have been together for seven years.

They also have two children together.

After the ceremony in the registry office, Silva spoke of a “very important step” for all of Chile.

It is the beginning of a country that deals with equality from a different perspective - which can also be understood as an allusion to the political changes of recent years in Chile.

This Friday, the new left-progressive President Gabriel Boric will be inaugurated.

Representatives of the government and various organizations also attended the wedding in the chic district of Providencia in the capital Santiago.
