• The end of the winter break, set for March 30, risks seeing evictions start to rise again in Hauts-de-France.

  • After falling to just above 1,078 in 2020, a year when courts were disrupted by the pandemic, those decisions soared to 1,492 in 2021.

Worry is in order.

The Abbé Pierre Foundation said on Tuesday it expected a "worrying increase in evictions from 2022" in Hauts-de-France, stressing that the number of court decisions was on the rise, while the winter break ends on 30 March.

With the extension of the winter break in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, "we can assume that the number of evictions actually carried out has dropped" over the past two years, underlines Isabelle Fourot, director of the foundation for Hauts-de-France. -France.

1,492 evictions in the region in 2021

On the other hand, in one of the poorest regions of France, where one inhabitant in five lives below the poverty line, the number of recourse to public force granted for evictions has started to rise again.

After falling to just above 1,078 in 2020, a year when courts were disrupted by the pandemic, those decisions soared to 1,492 in 2021.

Positive assessment of the “Housing First” strategy

The association already deplores "a worrying resumption of evictions without solutions" in informal living areas such as slums and other camps.

Thus 13 places of life were emptied in the fall of 2021, without permanent rehousing, “at a rate which had disappeared for several years on the territory”.

It also deplores the decision by the new prefect to suspend the relocation operation for 130 families sharing a slum in Lille, planned for mid-2021 for which solutions had nevertheless been identified and budgeted.

The Abbé-Pierre Foundation, on the other hand, welcomed the positive results of the “Housing first” strategy, carried out by several communities in the region, which are starting social support with permanent housing before tackling other issues.
