A small turn and then goes away.

The famous Lantern Festival will not return to the Toulouse conurbation next year.

The town hall of Blagnac announced on Tuesday that it was abandoning the organization of a second edition, despite the popular success of the event.

For two months, from December 1 and January 31, the event welcomed nearly 500,000 visitors to the Ritouret park, but only 410,000 via paid tickets when 450,000 should have been sold to balance the budget.

Despite the absence of the dreaded monster corks, the slate remains salty for the municipality which must absorb a deficit of 600,000 euros.

Joseph Carles, the mayor of the town, indicates that the war in Ukraine and "the tense international context" also weigh "uncertainties" on the level of attendance of a second edition.

He believes that “it is not up to the Blagnacais to carry a deficit which could become chronic”.

The Lantern Festival involves signing a contract with a Chinese company.

And in a fluctuating diplomatic context, he does not want to take any risks.
