The emotion was palpable Monday in the small village of Saché located in Indre-et-Loire.

Four refugee children from Ukraine were welcomed during a ceremony organized in the village where Honoré de Balzac lived.

Anastasia could not hold back her tears when she saw the 150 children from the school in Saché and the neighboring college in Azay-le-Rideau, waving the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine.

“My husband stayed in Kiev to fight.

We fled the city, crossed Germany and Poland to come here with four children, mine, Artem (13 years old) and Dary (3 years old), and those of Natalia, a friend from Lviv, Solomiya (14 years old) and Maksym (11),” said the 38-year-old mother.

“We are touched by the mobilization of the inhabitants, but our wish is to return as soon as possible to Ukraine, our country”, she explained, moved to hear the anthem of her country resound in the village of Touraine.

Balzac was linked to Ukraine

“Saché, 1,400 inhabitants, is a friendly commune of Ukraine, yesterday with Balzac, husband of Madame Hanska, who lived in Ukraine.

And today, because there is a Franco-Ukrainian community which welcomes refugees, ”reacted Jean-Gérard Paumier, the president of the departmental council of Indre-et-Loire, organizer of the welcoming ceremony.

The new Ukrainian pupils were welcomed on the forecourt of the town hall by the children, like Mathis, 9 years old: “I am happy to welcome new friends.

The mistress told us what was going on there.

Their homes are destroyed.

Children and adults died.

They are forced to flee their country”.

Anastasia and her two children have taken refuge with her sister Mariana, who has lived in Saché for three years.

“The goal was to get out of the country, to save the children.

They have been there for a week but they are already dreaming of leaving to find their dad, ”sighed his sister, Ukrainian from Touraine.

"My sister is waiting for her husband to tell her to come back and they will take their bags back."
