Vladimir Putin has declared

war on journalists

.

In Moscow, dozens of international media - such as

the BBC, CNN and ABC

- have decided to temporarily suspend their activities due to the law that threatens information professionals with 15 years in prison for

spreading "false" news

about the war in Moscow.

In the vicinity of Kiev, meanwhile, a Russian squad riddled with bullets the car in which five journalists from the

British network Sky News

were traveling and two of them were injured.

The incident, which occurred on Monday, is interpreted as a sign of intimidation of journalists who are covering the conflict from within.

"The war is getting worse every day," said Sky News correspondent Stuart Ramsey, who was shot in the back.

"We were lucky as far as it goes, and the vest surely saved our lives. But thousands of Ukrainians are dying and their families are being shot by

reconnaissance squads attacking

at will."

The Sky News team was returning to Kiev from the town of Bucha, 30 kilometers away, when the car

identified as "press" was hit by bullets

.

"The windshield disintegrated, the bullets entered through the window and through the bodywork and then I realized that they had hit me in the lower back, although it did not hurt much," recalls Ramsey.

Two bullets were also embedded in

cameraman Richie Mockler

's vest .

The other three occupants were uninjured.

The entire team decided to get out of the car and escape by running behind a concrete wall, until they reached a factory where they were rescued by the Ukrainian police.

In Moscow, meanwhile, journalists are prevented

from even writing or saying the word "war"

, replaced in the official media by "special military operation".

The law approved on Friday by the Upper House, and signed shortly after by Vladimir Putin, contemplates up to 15 years in prison for those who disclose what the Kremlin considers to be "fake news".

"This law reinforces with very harsh punishments all those who lie or make statements that discredit our armed forces," declared Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin.

The measure has provoked a chain reaction from the international media, fearing that their own correspondents could suffer reprisals from the Russian authorities.

In addition to the

BBC, CNN and ABC

, they have announced that

CBS , the

Bloomberg

agency ,

the German state channels

ARD and ZDF, the Italian state RAI, the Canadian CBC and the Spanish agency EFE have stopped broadcasting from Russia.

"This law criminalizes the work of independent journalism," said Tim Davie, director general of the BBC, the first medium to anticipate his "withdrawal."

"They leave us no choice but to temporarily

suspend the work of journalists in Russia

, while we assess its implications and the risk that they could be incriminated for carrying out their work. I want to pay tribute to all of them for their courage, their determination and their bravery." .

"The BBC's Russian-language service will continue to operate from outside Russia

," Davie added.

"We remain committed to taking our independent information around the world, including to the millions of Russians who use our services."

As a counterpoint, and for the first time in 14 years, the BBC has rescued its shortwave broadcasts that made history during the Second World War.

The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and the Reuters agency reported that they are evaluating the implications of the new law before making a decision.

John Micklethwait, at the head of Bloomberg News, came to a severe conclusion: "The change in the criminal code, which seems designed to turn a reporter into a criminal by mere association,

makes it impossible to continue to

exercise something similar to journalism within the country.
