On March 4, 1877, Pyotr Tchaikovsky's ballet "Swan Lake" was staged for the first time at the Bolshoi Theater. When working on it, the composer was inspired by the Bavarian Neuschwanstein castle and the work of the German composer Richard Wagner. The public did not immediately recognize the work, which later became a classic of Russian ballet. Critics, in particular, scolded the production of choreographer Wenzel Reisinger, comparing the movements of ballerinas with gymnastic exercises. Success for Swan Lake came in the mid-1890s, when the score, libretto, and production itself were revised.
