The tragedy unleashed by Putin's imperialist insanity is opening a humanitarian front that is no less worrying than the military or economic ones.

Nearly a million displaced in the first week of war

.

To find such a massive exodus in such a short time, you have to go back to World War II.

This migration crisis is an even greater challenge for Europe than the one caused by the war in Syria.

Not only because this time the bombings are heard much closer but for

the reason

morality that assists the Ukrainians.

They suffer an invasion that threatens to destroy their country forever for having committed the worst sin that can be committed in the eyes of the Russian autocrat:

the desire to live as Europeans.

His will to live in a liberal democracy is an unforgivable betrayal for someone like Putin who is imbued with a messianic historicism that recognizes neither borders nor laws nor human rights.

And he has decided to punish them for it by razing their cities, their freedoms and their lives.

We Europeans cannot look the other way while huge masses of refugees scatter across the continent fleeing war and seeking asylum.

The reaction of all EU countries has been commendable, including Poland and Hungary.

This willingness to welcome magnifies the project of the Union

, which is and should be before anything else a moral idea of coexistence.

In this dramatic context, yesterday we learned of an unprecedented decision by the European Commission: it will propose to the Council the application, for the first time since its creation as a result of the Balkan conflict, of

a temporary and immediate international protection directive to accommodate Ukrainian refugees

.

Once this directive is approved, displaced persons would have an automated residence and work permit in any EU country, without the need to analyze each individual case.

However, the directive has been adapted to the occasion.

Aware of the tensions caused by any large migration and in order to achieve unanimity, the 27 have limited the directive to the Ukrainians to please the Visegrad Group.

It is true that goodness can cause a call effect that is impossible to manage, and this phenomenon is associated with national-populist outbreaks and political polarization.

Merkel will surely remember those years.

And the countries that form the external border of the EU, as is the case of Spain to the south, are well aware of the dangers of disorderly migratory flows:

We have just witnessed the most numerous and brutal assault on the Melilla fence in memory

, with dozens of police officers and wounded assailants.

The mafias take advantage of the fact that attention is focused on the war in Ukraine to increase their business.

European migration policy cannot be left to the decision-making whim of the different countries.

Therefore

This historic decision implies a deepening of the ethical and political commitment

that gives meaning to the European project.

The humanitarian urgency challenges us, without forgetting the objective: that the reception be temporary but inclusive.
