Bitcoin will allow the Canadian city of North Vancouver to heat up.

This is the idea of the company MintGreen, which intends to recover the heat produced by the mining of cryptocurrency, reports Geo.

A world first according to the cryptomining company specializing in clean renewable energies.

For a Bitcoin transaction to be secure, it is necessary to encrypt the data and record it in the blockchain, or to carry out a mining operation.

However, mining involves using the computing power of computers dedicated to this task and which are energy-intensive.

For Bitcoin alone, the annual energy consumption of the network would amount to nearly 130 Twh according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity coonsumption Index.

This represents the electricity consumption of the Netherlands.

We are excited to announce that MintGreen will be providing low carbon heating at scale to North Vancouver, making them the first city in the world to be heated by #Bitcoin 🌱⚡⛏️ https://t.co/fD8PHkfGNK

Implementation in 2022

This high power consumption is coupled with high heat dissipation.

This is where MintGreen engineering comes in.

The idea is therefore to recover the heat produced by mining to develop a digital boiler.

96% of the energy produced by mining will be able to be reused according to Colin Sullivan, the general manager of MintGreen.

To carry out its project, the company signed a twelve-year contract in October 2021 with the company Lonsdale Energy Corporation (LEC).

This provides hot water and heating to the Canadian city of 50,000 inhabitants.

The first homes will be heated by MintGreen technology by the end of 2022. About a hundred buildings (residential and commercial) will be affected.

This project will reduce the production of greenhouse gases by nearly 20,000 tonnes.
