The Fire

by Jennifer Lynn Alvarez, published on March 2, 2022 by Éditions Albin Michel.

His favorite quote:

The fire is getting closer.

Now I can hear his hateful snore and smell his hot breath.

The tears streaming down my cheeks evaporate before reaching my chin.

Why this book?

  • Because this novel begins as a summer romance:

a group of friends who, like every summer, go swimming in the lake.

We then think of reading one of these novels referred to as “Young adult” and we immerse ourselves in a thriller as black as the smoke from the fire they accidentally set off.

  • Because between moral duty and compromised destinies

, we will have to choose.

However, does the friendship of a group survive a lie?

The whole plot is based on a fragile agreement between them, saying nothing, but who will crack first?

While the firefighters struggle to control this deadly fire, tension and betrayal are brewing in this group which has called itself the "monsters".

  • Because when the reader is in automatic mode,

a twist comes to disturb our attention: when one of the members is about to throw everything at the cops, she disappears... And here we are immersed in another time of the narration: a plot within the plot.

Formidable efficiency that keeps the reader alert until the end.
