Russia's invasion of Ukraine provokes strong reactions at home.

Elena Kovalskaya has been the director of the prestigious Meyerhold Center, named after the playwright Vsevolod Meyerhold, in Moscow since 2020.

The theater is state-funded and Kovalskaya says it is impossible for her to continue working.

"Friends, in protest of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I am resigning.

(...) You can not work for a killer and get paid by him (...) I will finish my projects ", she writes on her Facebook page.

The theater has gone out and supported its director.

"We can not keep quiet about this.

The only thing we can say is: "No to war", they write on their official Facebook page.

"Leaving with a heavy heart"

Elena Kovalskaya is joined by French Laurent Hilaire, director of the ballet company Stanislavsky Theater in Moscow.

Laurent Hilaire submitted his resignation over the weekend and says he will leave Moscow.

"I am leaving with a heavy heart," he told the AFP news agency on Sunday.
