No less than 35 low-intensity earthquakes were observed on the Mount Pelée volcano (Martinique) between February 18 and this Friday.
None of the volcano-tectonic phenomena that occurred during these seven days had an intensity greater than 0.5, reports La Première.
They were also not felt by the inhabitants of the island.
Formation of microfractures
The data was provided by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Martinique (OVSM), at a time when the volcano remains on yellow alert for seismic activity.
The minor earthquakes recorded recently occur at the same time as the appearance of microfractures on the mountain.
In addition to the 35 low-intensity events, OVSM specialists also announced that a hybrid-type earthquake had occurred during the same period.
It is a low frequency movement generated by the gas and water that Mount Pelee harbors.
