Change of direction.
After announcing on Thursday that Russia would participate in the 66th edition of Eurovision, the European Broadcasting Union is backpedaling.
In a press release published this Friday, the organizing body of the competition announces that no candidate will represent the country next May in Turin, Italy.
"In view of this unprecedented Ukrainian crisis, the presence of a song representing Russia would disrupt the competition", write the organizers, specifying that they have taken the time to consult its various members.
"The EBU is an apolitical organization of broadcasters committed to defending the values of public service", it is specified.
A protest movement among several European broadcasters
For several hours, several channels have spoken openly in favor of the exclusion of Russia from Eurovision, including Ukraine, Sweden, Denmark and Norway.
Later, the Dutch public service, the Finnish channel Yle as well as broadcasters from Lithuania, Estonia and Iceland joined the movement.
“We remain committed to protecting the values of a cultural competition that promotes international exchange and understanding, brings audiences together, celebrates diversity through music and unites Europe on one stage,” the statement concludes.
