In paradise I live

by Attica Locke, published on February 3, 2022 by Éditions Liana Levi.

His favorite quote:

After being rocked for years by the certainty that the universe was moving towards justice, he saw how little his friends and neighbors cared about his life, about his right to this country.

Why this book?

  • Because it's an atmospheric thriller that Attika Locke offers us.

We feel the sticky atmosphere between the men, their distorted relationships.

Some imagine themselves to have supremacy and take advantage of their status to crush others.

It's not just the elements linked to the relationships between the characters that create a “climate”.

    There are also places: Jefferson where Levi's grandmother plays a double game wonderfully, obnoxious under a smiling facade;

lying under a polished exterior... and especially the bayou, a universe in its own right, made of mud, mosquitoes and mystery...

  • Because the content (namely here a plot full of ramifications)

is worked as much as the context.

It's rich from every point of view, the protagonists have strong characters, the facts are not simple and linear and there is a real and deep reflection on the country, Texas more precisely.

Without sinking into politics, the author wonders.

Are we from a country when we very often seek our place, when we sometimes have to justify the right to exist, to have a job?

Racism is always present, and it must be fought again and again...

  • Because the author has elegant

(thanks to the translator), delicate writing and a meaningful style.

The content and the form are in perfect harmony and there is a real depth in his story.

Residents of the Hopetown community and the grandmother of the missing.

The father of the child.

Places.

Texas, the city of Jefferson, and Hopetown, a community 25 km away.

The time.

 Late 2016, before Trump's inauguration.

The author.

Attica Locke is a screenwriter for film and television.

A teacher at the Sundance Institute, she is currently working on a series on the civil rights movement.

She was born in 1974 and has been writing since 2009. She has been translated into many languages.

This book was read with

many emotions because the author knows how to transmit them perfectly.

I felt the anger rise in the face of racism, I wanted to intervene to help those who were suffering or had questions.

To read Attica Locke is to accept being shaken, upset...
