The shock gave way to sadness after the announcement of the death of Mark Lanegan at 57 years old.

The musician, a major influence on grunge who inspired Kurt Cobain, among others, with whom he was friends, “died at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” his family announced yesterday.

Since then, messages have been pouring in to recall his artistic influence and his kindness.

Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre, expressed his "absolute shock".

“A very beautiful soul has left this world.

I love you brother… My deepest condolences to his family and friends,” he added on Twitter.

Iggy Pop sent his "deepest respect" to the artist in a tweet he signed "Your fan".

Garbage said they were "terribly saddened" by the passing of the Queens of the Stone Age member.

Peter Hook, co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, hailed the memory of a "lovely man".

“He leaves us with fantastic words and music.

Thankfully he will live through this forever,” he tweeted along with a photo of them on stage.

Relatives of Mark Lanegan did not detail the causes of death of the singer, who had been hospitalized for several months last year and placed in an artificial coma after contracting Covid-19.
