A similar approach was proposed ahead of the 2019 edition of the gala, but then the organizers backed off after extensive criticism.

Last year's gala, however, had the worst viewing figures ever - 9.23 million TV viewers, down 51 percent from last year's 18.69 million - which has led the organizers to take more drastic measures.

However, it is promised that all thank-you speeches will be shown during the TV broadcast, but that more space will be given to the entertainment between the prizes.

The prizes awarded before the TV broadcast include the best short film documentary, best editing and best film music.

In total, eight of the gala's 23 prizes will not be included in the live broadcast.

New for this year is an award for the audience's favorite film where the winner is voted on Twitter.

The gala, led by the trio Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall after three years without a host, will be held on March 27.
