Going from a mask to a protractor is possible.
Yes Yes !
In Châtellerault, the Plaxtil company, co-founded by Olivier Civil, has recycled 25 million used masks since June 2020 by transforming them into brackets, ashtrays, pencil holders, photo holders, etc.
Originally, the company recycled textile waste from fashion, but with the pandemic, it has diversified.
"We wanted to show that the masks, which are used daily by millions of people, were textiles that could also be recycled," says Olivier.
They are first disinfected using UV rays, then crushed to make small plastic balls, reusable to mold new objects.
Replace blank plastic
From now on, the company is continuing its initial mission of textile recycling, with this second activity of recycling used masks.
Objective: to recover the plastic elements that already exist so that they can be used as a base material and replace virgin plastic, derived from petroleum.
"A mask that is normally worn for a few hours and then thrown away, well we're actually going to give it one, two, three, ten different lives," rejoices Olivier.
In addition to masks, his company also recycles disposable personal protective equipment, i.e. gowns, caps, overshoes... He explains everything in this video from our partner Brut.
