According to initial findings, the container ship "Mumbai Maersk" foundered due to a misjudgment when navigating.

This was announced by the water police on Tuesday morning in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony.

At the beginning of February, the container giant got stuck in shallow water a good six kilometers north of the East Frisian island of Wangerooge.

The almost 400 meter long ship had to be towed free and then entered Bremerhaven.

According to the water police, the ship had to turn around in the fairway due to berth problems and set sail again in the direction of the sea to wait for a new arrival time.

Shortly after this turning manoeuvre, the ship's command had received the order to call in after all, since the berth had meanwhile become available.

During the renewed turning manoeuvre, the ship drove onto a tipping point for dredged material.

There were no indications of technical problems on board.

In order to obtain information about the reason for the accident, the authorities had evaluated recording devices, so-called VDR (Voyage Data Recorder), electronic sea charts and the radar recordings of the traffic centers of the waterways and shipping offices.

Administrative offense proceedings had been initiated against the responsible ship's command on the container ship and the pilots involved.
