R. Kelly is fighting back after being found guilty of nine counts in New York in September.
The singer's new lawyer has filed a motion to seek an acquittal or a new trial in the case.
The interpreter of
Ignition
was sentenced, among other things, for racketeering, sexual exploitation of a minor and kidnapping.
The New York judge is due to rule on the sentence in May.
He faces a sentence of between 10 years and life in prison.
Maître Jennifer Bonjean argues that her client was not entitled to an “impartial” and “fair” trial, contrary to what the Sixth Amendment of the American Constitution provides.
The lawyer argues that her client's rights would have been flouted, in particular by the bad legal advisers who had been assigned to her at the time of the procedure.

, the lawyer explains that her predecessors failed in their duty to choose impartial jurors, some selected having admitted to having seen

.
This documentary, posted on Netflix, gave the floor to several women claiming to have been victims of rape and abuse by the artist, some of whom were minors at the time of the events.
She also adds that R. Kelly's former lawyer, Nicole Blank Becker, had advised one of the main accusers, a key witness for the prosecutor, while at the same time taking care of the interests of the artist.
The singer's new lawyer previously succeeded in getting Bill Cosby out of jail and overturning his conviction.
R. Kelly is still to be tried for child pornography and obstruction, in Chicago this time, starting August 1.
