Damascus bid farewell to "Bakdash", the owner of the most famous ice cream in the East

The Syrian capital, Damascus, lost one of its most prominent commercial and social symbols, with the departure of Mowaffaq Bakdash, owner of the most famous ice cream shop or the famous Damascene "Arabian ice cream", known as "Bakdash Ice Cream".

The "Bakdash Ice Cream" store, located in the historical Hamidiya market in the center of Damascus, is one of the most prominent ancient landmarks in the country, which has always been a destination for Syrians, and Damascenes in particular, and for tourists whose tours in the Syrian capital were not complete without visiting "Bakdash Ice Cream" and enjoying its unique taste. .

The shop was also a destination for many senior visitors to the country, including heads of state, kings and celebrities, who were keen to visit this ancient Damascene landmark.

The ice cream prepared by Bakdash shops is distinguished by its own traditional method of making, where the ice cream is repeatedly pounded by hand with a pointed wooden stick called "mehbaj", inside special metal containers, until it becomes homogeneous and ready to be served.

The opening of the "Bakdash Ice Cream" store at the hands of the late father, Muhammad Hamdi Bakdash, dates back to 1895, more than a century and a quarter of a century ago, and since then it has been on the throne of the ice cream industry in the Arab East.

Bakdash's departure constituted an occasion for Syrian social media pioneers to talk about their long memories with his ice cream, noting that Bakdash did not lock his doors even during the Friday holiday, due to the heavy demand for him throughout the week.

In a report by "Sky News Arabia", others elaborated on the "special atmosphere" that characterizes this small but well-known shop. With the chimes of wooden mahabij, its diners eat ice cream prepared manually with natural materials and traditional methods, without interference from machines.
