The sister of New York investment fraudster Bernard "Bernie" Madoff, Sondra Wiener, is dead. As reported by American media, the eighty-seven-year-old died last week from a gunshot wound at her home in Valencia Lakes (Florida).

Next to her was the body of her 90-year-old husband, Marvin Wiener, who also had a gunshot wound.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff reported an "apparent amplified suicide."

"The cause of death is under investigation by the coroner's office," the sheriff's office said.

Sondra Wiener was the older sister of the alleged investor Madoff, who had swindled more than $20 billion through a Ponzi scheme.

He was arrested in 2008 on tips from his late sons Mark and Andrew Madoff.

A few months later, a federal court sentenced him to 150 years in prison.

Madoff died in a North Carolina prison earlier this year at the age of 82.

In addition to numerous private investors and companies, Madoff had cheated his sister out of her fortune.

Wiener and her husband were forced to sell their home at the ritzy Ballen Isles Country Club in Palm Beach in 2009 after Madoff cheated them out of more than $3 million.
