When an experience is too painful, it happens that the mind conceals it for a time;
but his memory may resurface, sometimes much later, in the form of flashbacks, sensory illusions or nightmares.
This is a phenomenon called "traumatic memory" and which Mathilde suffered.
“We left for the weekend with friends and we all had our children, remembers Mathilde.
In the evening, a friend came up to see if the children were sleeping well and I began to feel immensely angry.
It was this event that allowed very old memories to "rise, in flashes, to the surface", she says.
One thing leading to another, she remembered having been sexually assaulted when she herself was a child.
“Put softness on the pain”
Since then, Mathilde has symbolically filed a complaint against her attacker (a bishop who has now disappeared) and is campaigning to make public the list, held by the Church, of deceased priests accused of sexual assault.
“I think it's important to free yourself and move on, to put a little sweetness on the pain”.
