Minister of Women and Family Affairs advises men to beat their wives

A Malaysian minister has sparked outrage after she advised men to beat their "stubborn" wives to discipline them for unruly behaviour.

Siti Zila Muhammad Yusuf, Malaysia's deputy minister of women's affairs for family and community development, was accused of perpetuating domestic violence by urging men to beat their wives, "in order to discipline and deter them from the husband's provocative behaviour".

The Deputy Minister also urged women to speak to their husbands only when they are authorized, in order to win over their partners.

(RT) quoted the minister as saying: "Speak to your husbands when they calm down and finish eating and pray comfortably. And when you want to talk, ask permission first."

Meanwhile, the coalition of women's rights groups accused Siti Zilla of spreading domestic violence.

He demanded that she resign from her position as Deputy Minister of Women.

"The Deputy Minister must step down due to the normalization of domestic violence, which is a crime in Malaysia. As well as for spreading ideas and behaviors that go against the principle of gender equality," a statement read.
