"The passenger was interfering with the affairs of the cabin crew," said Kansas City Department of Aviation spokesman Joe McBride, adding that the incident would be the responsibility of the FBI.

For its part, the FBI confirmed the incident in a statement that the person concerned had been detained.

"The flight was diverted due to the interference of an unruly passenger in the cabin crew. The person has been arrested. No further information is available at this time," the FBI statement read.

The Federal Aviation Administration also confirmed that cabin crew had reported passenger disruption on an Airbus A321.

Moaz Mustafa, who lives in Washington, DC, was among the passengers on the plane and told CNN that he saw a flight attendant shouting to another flight attendant asking her to turn on the lights.

Mustafa said that the plane then began to descend quickly.


Mustafa explained that more passengers went to the front of the plane to help restrain the passenger, noting that the passenger was trying to enter the cockpit and open the plane's door, and the flight attendant used a coffee pot to hit the passenger on the head.

When the plane landed, police and the FBI got on board to conduct an investigation into the incident, Mustafa said.


Passengers were rescheduled on another flight.
