On the day of the tragedy, a man was sitting in the audience and attending a town council.

He stayed there for six hours before opening fire 37 times, killing eight elected officials and injuring 19.

An organized commemoration

Richard Durn, 33, had been arrested.

While in police custody, he managed to get out of the fourth floor window.

He had explained his gesture in a letter, sent to a friend.

He said there that he wanted to attack "a mini local elite", in a town he had "always hated".

A commemoration organized by the city will take place on March 26 and 27.

Residents are invited to place candles and lights near the windows, in memory of the victims.
