• Obesity This is what happens when fat cells take over the body

  • Diet Little sleep, light dinner and other things that make you fat and you don't know it

It is one of the great mysteries of humanity.

The secret that those who, to their desperation, have been

chaining diet after diet

for half their lives without achieving that those kilos that it cost them so much to get rid of do not return at the first opportunity.

How is it possible to consolidate weight loss?

What is behind this 'miracle'?

Well, that is precisely what a group of researchers from California Polytechnic State University (San Luis Obispo, California) has tried to find out in the

first

large-scale

study carried out on this subject and that was published on February 9 in 'Obesity: The Journal of The Obesity Society'.

To do this, they identified more than

6,000 people

who had not only managed to lose an average of about 50 pounds (approximately

22 kilos

) but, more importantly, had not regained it, and they asked them a

questionnaire

with questions open about their

motivations

(past and present);

their

strategies

to maintain that weight loss and the changes they had consolidated in their

lifestyle

after their feat (yes, feat).

As the authors of the study explain, one of the findings that has most caught their attention is

the incredible strength that perseverance can have

- that quality that is so in the doldrums in these times of 'I want it all and I want it now '- as a tool to

overcome the obstacles

that were arising for their interviewees on the way to their reconciliation with the scale.

What's more, as they could see, the people who managed to maintain the weight loss accepted these setbacks as part of their journey to triumph over obesity.

Far from considering them as insurmountable failures, they took them as small mistakes to learn from in order to get back on the right path in search of their new self at the next meal or the next day and, in this way, assess the success of their mission based on

long-term goals

.

Health was, according to this hopeful report, the most powerful of the motivations when it came to losing weight, since most of those who managed to lose weight decided to do so to try to stop the advance of different

pathologies related to obesity

, such as diabetes or heart disease.

Others, on the other hand, confessed to feeling more concerned about the

mobility problems

that the extra kilos caused them.

And, of course, the desire to have a healthier and/or more attractive appearance, coupled with pressure from family or friends and the need to change their lives, also served as an incentive.

What advice did respondents offer, first-hand, to other people experiencing the same health journey?

In addition to highlighting the aforementioned importance of perseverance as a weapon to overcome the inevitable setbacks that one has to face when changing the course of his life, these winners of the fight against obesity recommend

'go game by game'

, not project and not expect great results in the short term.

Seeking positive reinforcement in

psychological help workshops

is, as the respondents experienced firsthand, the best way to mentally overcome after going through difficult times.

Similarly, they pointed to the constant 'monitoring' of the

nutritional quality of the food

we eat as an essential skill within a healthy lifestyle.

In this revealing report it was shown that in this, there is no more miraculous formula than to act sensibly and cling to great truths that, beyond the circumstances of each one, could be considered universal.

Like, although the physical aspect also matters (we are not going to deny it),

health must be our main motivation

when it comes to losing weight.

It is also essential to be clear that the most important changes that we are going to experience include the improvement of our state of

health

in general: the increase in our self-

confidence

;

reduction of joint pain;

and the increase of our physical and emotional well-being.

On the other side of the scale, among the small setbacks that must be faced in the face of such a physical change, those who have experienced it point to three easily assumable ones: the expense of having to buy

new clothes

;

the flaccidity of the skin and the

slanderous criticism

of those who think about everything without anyone having asked them to do so.

Three minor inconveniences (above all, that of the reviewers) that, without a doubt, compensate for the injection of health that involves getting

rid of those extra kilos

that dynamite us physically and mentally.
