The presence of an antibody in the blood, known as a lupus anticoagulant, increases the probability of complications and mortality from

, according to a study by the Althaia Foundation.
Lupus anticoagulant is an antibody that may be present in the blood due to autoimmune diseases or an acute infection.
The study by Dr. Mireia Constans, assistant to the Hematology Service of the Althaia Foundation in Manresa (Barcelona), aimed to study whether there was a relationship between the presence of the anticoagulant and an increase in arterial or venous thrombotic episodes and higher mortality.
The research, published in the journal "Thrombosis Research", included 211
Covid
patients who underwent the lupus anticoagulant test at the time of admission to the Althaia Foundation, in April 2020.
The test was positive in 128 patients (60.7%) and the probability of survival at 31 days was worse in the group that tested positive for lupus anticoagulant (60%) compared to the one that had tested negative (90%).
