It was in 1822, just 200 years ago, that the first freed slaves left the United States, returned to Africa and settled in a territory they called "Liberia".

But for two centuries, Liberia has known the best and the worst, the brightest hopes and the greatest massacres.

Francis Kpatindé worked in Monrovia for the UNHCR.
