A college student kills his colleague: I wanted to "reduce her suffering" after we agreed to commit suicide

A 19-year-old college student was killed by a lethal drug injection Friday in a Utah hotel by her boyfriend, who claimed he killed her "to save her from suffering," according to reports and police.

The victim, an unidentified scholarship student from China studying at the University of Utah, was found dead Friday morning by Salt Lake Police in Quality Inn, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The killer is 26-year-old Haoyu Wang, who the Salt Lake City Police Department says is in their custody, is also a student from China who attended the same university, according to the police and college.

In a press release, the police department described the massacre as "a domestic violence-related murder, with Wang identified as the victim's friend."

The university and police are withholding the victim's identity until her family is notified.

Citing a statement of the probable cause of death, the Salt Lake Tribune reported that Wang sent an email to an employee at his university revealing that he injected the victim with drugs "to rid her of suffering," and the drug used was heroin.

According to a possible cause statement, Wang told police that he and the 19-year-old had made a suicide pact, and that he had purchased the drugs via the "dark web," the Tribune reported.

Wang told Salt Lake City Police Homicide Squad investigators that he killed the 19-year-old and later attempted suicide by injecting himself with drugs, according to the police department's press release.

And the "Tribune" newspaper reported that officers went to the hotel after the University of Utah reported to police that the man threatened the girl.

According to court records seen by the Tribune, Wang was charged with domestic violence in January.
